3 including Marshal Agrovet Chairman sent to jail

Dhaka, Bangladesh (bssnews.net) — October 9, 2023 — A Dhaka court sent three persons including Marshal Agrovet Chairman Mohammad Ali to jail for supplying Aedes mosquito repelling bacteria, by fraudulently using the name of a Singaporean pesticide company.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam today passed the order after scrapping both the defendants' bail plea and remand application from the state.

As per the court's order, the trio surrendered before the court on October 6. Earlier on August 24, they secured bail from the High Court (HC).

According to the case, 'Marshall Agrovet Chemical Industries Limited' was permitted by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to import supply 5,000 kilograms of Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis (BTI) larvicides, to eliminate the larvae of dengue-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

According to the tender agreement between the company and DNCC, pesticides were to be imported from a specified company in Singapore, but on August 1, the DNCC was supplied some locally produced pesticides, labeled as 'Best Chemical Company Limited'.

During the inauguration programme of the pest controlling event on August 3, the accused introduced Li Qiuyang, a Chinese national, as the representative of the Singaporean company.

Later, when the news of the programme was circulated in the social media, both 'Best Chemical Company' and the Singaporean company responded to the fraudulency.

On August 21, Dhaka North City Corporation's Assistant Warehouse and Purchase Officer M. Rahat Al Faisal filed the case against four including Li Qiyang, as the company couldn't give satisfactory explanation to the DNCC in this regard.
