The Cameron County Health Department is looking to bring Zika back into the spotlight with Zika Action Day.
The county plans to inform the community about the importance of prevention through education.
Cameron County Health Educator Veronica Ramirez Garcia believes the Valley should always be on alert for the virus.
“It’s really important for people not to let their guard down,” Garcia said. “We may not have had any cases recently, but it’s really important for them to take measures to protect themselves, their families, and especially pregnant women to get tested.”
According to Garcia, people shouldn’t hold off on getting tested for Zika, because it could potentially stop the spread in the community.
The department will be handing out Zika prevention kits that include mosquito dunks, mosquito repellent, steps to prevent Zika and condoms.
Zika Action Day will take place Saturday, May 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 5955 North Expressway in Brownsville.
